Why Does It Matter: Water Baptism
Matt 28:16-20
16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore* and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in
- Believe this or not…I really love the English language…when I was in College English and English Lit was some of my favorite courses…Now I speak conversational English, but I enjoy proper English.
- Prepositions are vital to the English language and what they say to us in the sentence matters greatly…honestly if you don’t understand them, you can change the entire meaning of a statement by misinterpreting the prepositions…by the way there are 70 prepositions in the English Language
- In the text we see many prepositions inserted but this word “IN” that is located right here matters…because it means “INTO” remember that as we move forward in this message…
the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.*
NKJV
Intro. When a person gets saved & gives their lives to the Lordship of Jesus there are some foundational things that must take place in their lives
- Get Planted in a Church
Ps 92:12-14
12 The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree,
He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
13 Those who are planted in the house of the Lord
Shall flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They shall still bear fruit in old age;
They shall be fresh and flourishing,
NKJV
- Get a Bible – read Mark & Matthew – John
- You need to follow the Lord in Baptism.
Transition:
Jesus is not just our Savior, but he is our example & pattern for life. So, if Jesus was baptized as our example we should be baptized as well.
Matt 3:13-17
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?”
15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.
16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He* saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
NKJV
- Baptism
- Means “to immerse”
- To immerse means to be plunged into a thing…completely immersed in it so that it covers and surrounds…to engross, absorb
- The Water acts as a Grave…
- It also is a place of Identification…
- Exchange and Receiving new Identification in Christ Jesus
- In Mark & Matt. Jesus commands us to be baptized.
- Acts 2: 38
Peter in his message on the day of Pentecost commanded them to Repent & be baptized!
Acts 2: 41 – “Then those who gladly received his word were baptized.”
- Old Testament Typology
Introduction: The Old Testament speaks to us in several ways: Historically, Literally, anthro-po-mor-phic, (means to have human attributes or traits), and in type & shadows.
Example: Ps. 91 “shadow of the almighty”
Ps 91:1
91 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
NKJV
- There is no shadow or turning in God…God is such pure light he cannot cast a shadow…so it is a type and shadow for us to observe and learn from.
- Baptism into the Priesthood – Old Testament
- Jewish tradition taught that when one priest was to be replaced by another the present the current residing priest would baptize the replacing priest…the first priest still maintained his priesthood…but now another was in his place
- Matt. 3: 15 – “Fulfill all righteousness”
- Had nothing to do in the Greek with righteousness & in right standing with but had to do with it being the requirement of God.
- New Covenant Theology
- Old Testament the Jews taught Circumcision was a sign of faith, the New Covenant Baptism is a sign of faith in Christ Jesus.
- Col 2:12-15
12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
ESV
- Romans 6: 1-4 “Dead to sin, alive to God”
- Rom 6:1-4
6 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
NKJV
- Who Needs to Be Baptized
Matt. 11: 11 “Assuredly I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist”
So let’s look back at Matt 3 and review
- John’s attitude towards baptism.
Matt 3: 14
- Though John was full of the Holy Spirit from the womb, (LK 1: 15) he still desired to be baptized by Jesus
- The most purest of men are usually the most sensitive to their own impurities and seek spiritual washing
- The best and holiest of men have need of Christ, the better they are, the more they see that need
- John said this in front of a multitude who was trying to crown him the Messiah, yet his statement put him in a place of humility before men and God
- Even though John was dealing with the condition of other people’s souls, he was aware of his own soulish need
1 Tim 4:16
16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
NKJV
- People who were baptized in scripture
- Scripture teaches that the Red Sea crossing was Israel’s baptism
- Acts 2: 41 – Converts who were saved on the day of Pentecost
- Acts 8: 12-13 “Samaritans were baptized”
- Acts 9: 18 “Paul the Apostle was baptized”
- Acts 10: 44-48 “Cornelius and his household”
- Acts 16: 31-33 “Philippian jailer”
Transition: If I may I would like to move beyond the initial baptism that we see in Water and not even in the Holy Spirit…but what I see about being baptized in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit…recall our earlier conversation concerning prepositions…this is why it is important…
- Taking Baptism To Another Level
- We have established that Baptism means immersion…to be plunged into a matter so that it covers and surrounds. Matthew 28 says, “be baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit…”
- Father for Identity…”this is my Son in whom I am well pleased.”
- Son for Relationship…”We are joint heirs with Christ Jesus…”
- Holy Spirit for Purpose and Direction…”He will lead you in all truth and righteousness.” John 16
- Let’s go deeper and then I will be finished…

- This is what I know about the Last two weeks…there has been a Supernatural Exchange Through Identifying with…
- The day you were Baptized was just the beginning of your journey to be Immersed in Him…
- 1 Peter 3:21-22
21 The waters of baptism do that for you, not by washing away dirt from your skin but by presenting you through Jesus’ resurrection before God with a clear conscience. 22 Jesus has the last word on everything and everyone, from angels to armies. He’s standing right alongside God, and what he says goes.
