Grit: Growing Grit

 GRIT

“Cause Sometimes, Life is Gonna Take More That What Ya Got”

Part 3 – Grow In Grit

2 Peter 1:3-5

3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

Title: Grow in Grit –

PRAY!!!

Introduction: Over the past few weeks we have discussed this idea of Grit…using the Movie True Grit as a jumping-off Point:

John Wayne Quotes:

  • “Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. It’s perfect when it arrives, and it puts itself in our hands. Hoping we learned something from yesterday.”
  • • One more quote: Enthusiasm is common. Endurance is rare!

Last time I talked about Grit as an Acronym:

  • • Growth
  • • Responsibility
  • • Intentionality
  • • Time

Especially – Grace and Grit:

Matt 11:28-29

28 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real

rest. 29 Walk with me and work with me — watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.

In 2016 Angela Duckworth wrote a book for the educational community called GRIT. Her conclusions were the great separator of students and successful teachers aren’t related so much to IQ or EQ…but GRIT. Successful people whether students or teachers…leaders and believers…there is a tenacity, perseverance, a passion, a resilience…that others need to grow in.

“Grit is having the courage to push through, no matter what the obstacles are because it’s worth it.” — Chris Morris.

Cost vs. Value

  • • Grit is a cost versus Value Question…you’re not asking how much it is going to cost you as Much as you’re asking…How Much is it Worth?

2 Peter 1:3-5

3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

ESV

  1. I. Grow in Grit a. This verse in 2Peter is one of my favorite verses… a matter of fact I have spent quite a bit of
    1. time lately in 2Peter…so much so it may be my summer series…
      1. b. Verse 3 tells us the source of our Grit i. 3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence
      2. ii. The source is His Divine Power…coupled with my cooperation… 1. It isn’t an either/or…rather it is a both/and Both His Divine Power and My Cooperation…
      3. Peter, over the course of his life, learned the source of His Grittiness and how to cooperate with it… See 2Peter gives us a glimpse at the Maturation of this Great man…who hasn’t lost his grittiness but has refined it. i. I recall taking a woodshop class in high school and on a project, I used the wrong sandpaper and went the wrong direction with the sandpaper…

Quote: Nobody wants to show you the hours and hours of BECOMING. They’d rather show the highlight of what they’ve become.

2 Peter 1 shows us Who Peter has become…but what is amazing we get to see His Becoming…all through Scripture.
